Welcome to Mosaics by Jackie

My name is Jackie Greene and I love making mosaics. I have been creating
mosaics for about 8 years. I have always been interested in art. I like to
paint and sketch. My love for mosaics came from a very personal
experience. In my early thirties, I had a major depression episode. I went to
a hospital in B'ham, AL for treatment. While I was there, I met someone who
was very talented artist. He told me how he used his art as a way of
releasing emotions. So from there I just started playing around with
sketching different types of shapes and patterns. I soon realized that I could
express myself through the use of lines and angles. I noticed that I could tell
what kind of mood I was in by the type of sketch. I used circles and spirals
for happiness, jagged lines for anger and frustration, and angles to connect.
From there I started using old plates and pottery to create these shapes on a
base. I was amazed at what I could do with $5 dollars worth of stuff from a
flea market. After that I was completely hooked. I read every book about
mosaics that I could get my hands on. I used my love of mosaics as a
therapy. I tried to mosaic everything. You would be surprised at what all
you can mosaic. I started using different materials and bases. The word got
out at my church that I made mosaics. Our pastor heard and wanted to talk
to me about creating a mosaic cross for the contemporary worship at our
church. We talked and came up with the mosaic cross on the next page. I
would like to thank God for showing me this talent that I didn't know I
possessed until faced with the depths of despair. He showed me my gift to
raise me up and to glorify Him.

projects through my church, First United Methodist Church, Tuscaloosa, AL
